Matthew started playing the clarinet at the age of eight at the Elementary School of Arts \u017derot\u00edn in Olomouc. In 2019, he transferred to the Elementary School of Arts I\u0161a Krej\u010d\u00ed Olomouc, where he studied for four years under the guidance of his teacher Zde\u0148ka Andre\u00e1\u0161ov\u00e1. In September 2023, he joined the class of Prof. Milan Pol\u00e1k at the Grammar and Music School of the Capital City of Prague.<\/p>

In the 2023\/24 school year, he was selected for the prestigious scholarship program MenArt Academy, where he studies under the guidance of clarinetist doc. Irvin Veny\u0161 (HAMU, Prague). He also gains experience at master classes under the guidance of prominent Czech and foreign teachers (Milan Pol\u00e1k, V\u00edt Spilka, Jan Mach, Anna Paulov\u00e1, Paolo Beltramini).<\/p>

Matthew is a solo clarinetist, a member of trio MaJeStic (clarinet – Matthew Hockaday, violin – Jan Cerman and piano – Semjon Yakimov), member of trio Brahms (clarinet – Matthew Hockaday, cello – Seoyeon Lim and piano – Semjon Yakimov) and a member of a clarinet quartet. He also plays in the Wind Orchestra of the Elementary School of Arts I\u0161a Krej\u010d\u00ed Olomouc.<\/p>

Since the age of eight Matthew has been a regular participant in the Kent Music Summer School in Great Britain. He is the principal clarinetist in two youth orchestras in the UK \u2013 the Kent Youth Wind Orchestra (KYWO) and the Kent County Youth Orchestra (KCYO).<\/p>

Matthew achieves excellent results in national and international competitions. His greatest achievements include 2nd degree honorable mention and special prize from the Bohuslav Martin\u016f Foundation at the International Radio Competition Concertino Praga 2024.\u00a0 Platinum prize at the European Classical Music Awards (2025), First prize at the London Classical Music Competition (2025, UK), Gold medal with honorary mention at the 8th Manhattan International Music Competition (2024, USA), Platinum Prize at the London Young Musician (2022\/23, UK), 1st Prize at the International Mozart Competition Vienna (2023, Austria), 1st Prize at the London Classical Music Competition (2023, UK), 1st Prize at the International Music Competition OPUS (2023, Poland), 2nd Prize at the International Moscow Music Competition (2021, Russia) and 2nd Prize at the Classic Music Competition \u201cPerusia Harmonica\u201d (2021, Italy).<\/p>

He is the holder of the 1st prize and laureate from the international interpretation competition Pro Bohemia Ostrava 2023, 1st prize from the National round of the Czech Elementary Schools of Arts competition in clarinet (2022) and gained three 1st prizes and the Special Prize for Extraordinary Clarinet Performance at the National Woodwind Instruments competiton Litv\u00ednov Woodwinds (2020, 2021, 2022). He has also recieved 1st prize with trio Brahms, 1st prize with the clarinet quartet and 2nd prize with trio MaJeStic at the competition Camerata Teplice 2025.\u00a0<\/p>

In 2021, Matthew played Anton\u00edn Dvo\u0159\u00e1k\u2019s Sinfonia No. 8 in G major with the Moravian Philharmonic Orchestra Olomouc. In November 2023, he performed as a solo clarinetist with the Jan\u00e1\u010dek Philharmonic Orchestra Ostrava under the baton of conductor Stanislav Vav\u0159\u00ednek. He played the Concerto for Clarinet and Orchestra in E flat major, Op.36 by Franti\u0161ek Kram\u00e1\u0159.\u00a0In June 2023, he gave his first recital concert at the Archbishop\u2019s Palace in Olomouc, where he performed all three instruments, clarinet, piano and recorder and also sang. In December 2023, he performed at a Christmas concert at the Toyen Gallery in Prague.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>

In March 2024, he performed at the Young Talents concert at the Pr\u016fhonice Chateau and performed his second recital concert at the 51st Preludium Alois Mot\u00fdl 2024 festival in the Monastery Church in \u0160umperk. In April 2024, he performed as a soloist with the Prague Symphony Orchestra in the Smetana Hall of the Municipal House in Prague. This was part of the Josef Suk Young Talent\u00b4s series under the baton of conductor Arthur Post.\u00a0<\/span>In May 2024 Matthew gave his third recital concert at the Archbishop\u2019s Palace in Olomouc. In June 2024 he performed as a soloist with the West Bohemian Symphony Orchestra in Mari\u00e1nsk\u00e9 L\u00e1zn\u011b under the baton of conductor Radek Babor\u00e1k.\u00a0 He also performed at the prestigious Smetana\u2019s Litomy\u0161l 2024 festival.<\/span><\/p>

In September 2024, as part of the International Radio Competition Concertino Praga, he performed at the “Talent Stage” at the Dvo\u0159\u00e1k Prague International Music Festival and at the South Bohemian Festival.\u00a0<\/p>

In January 2025 he played at the ,,Hudebn\u00ed Odyssea” in Atrium \u017di\u017ekov in collaboration with the MenArt academy. In May 2025 he gave his fourth recital concert at the Archbishop\u00b4s\u00a0 Palace in Olomouc. Later in August he performed at the opening concert of the MenArt academy in Reduta, Olomouc alongside the great pianist Nora Lubbadov\u00e1 and violinist Matteo Hager. In October he played Monti\u00b4s Czardas at the award ceremony for the best toy of the year and in November he was part of the professional jury at the 27th year of the Zlat\u00fd O\u0159\u00ed\u0161ek competition.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t
